The Department of Language Studies of the Czech Language Institute (Czech Academy of Sciences) has been providing language courses with attention to the professional needs of people working in science and research. Our goal is to ensure that all our students from the CAS reach the B1 or B2 level according to the European Framework of Reference in at least one foreign language and are then able to further develop the specific academic skills needed to successfully present their work.

The Department includes the Center for Academic Academic Writing, which has been helping academics and students since 2011 to write and present in English. The support takes the form of courses, individual consultations and workshops.

Our services primarily target the employees of the Czech Academy of Sciences, but we also welcome members of the general public. We care deeply about providing the best quality teaching and we take pride in our teachers’ professionalism.

Language courses

Currently, we offer courses in the following languages:

  • English
  • Czech for Foreigners
  • German
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Italian
  • Japanese for complete beginners (starting from the 2024/2025 school year)

Our face-to-face courses take place in Prague – Ládví (premises in the building of the Institute of Computer Science) and in Brno, but we also offer a wide range of online and blended courses where face-to-face instruction alternates with online lessons.  All languages are taught with the support of LSM e-learning platform Moodle which allows us to enhance the instruction with interactive content and materials.

Center for academic writings

The Center for Academic Writing focuses on science communication in English. These days, various AI tools can help with language editing on the surface level of the text, but effective writing goes deep beyond that. The most common problems in research writing tend to be in the structure of the text and the omission or implicit formulation of important ideas – for example, students often struggle with clearly defining their research problem. At the Centre, we offer courses, give workshops and consultations where we address these issues. We now also offer a writing group to help you increase your productivity and set a regular writing routine.
